In an El Paso courthouse not far from where a gunman killed 23 people at a Walmart in a 2019 attack targeting Hispanic shoppers, victims’ family members and survivors got their last chance to address him face-to-face in court this week.

On Sunday, the hearses left La Paz and followed a police escort for the five mile procession to the memorial. There were so many flowers at La Paz that it took nearly an hour for about 100 volunteers to load the hearses. Cars stopped in both directions as the 22 hearses passed. "Seeing 22 hearses is just unbelievable." Pictures on the Perches Funeral Homes Facebook page showed two lines of hearses parked at the memorial site.

The 63-year-old, who was killed when a gunman opened fire in an El Paso Walmart this month, left behind few relatives, and none live in El Paso. Elodia Perches, co-owner of La Paz Faith--Perches Funeral Home, said the funeral home has received more than 400 flower arrangements so far. "I promised her fresh roses every day," Basco said. The couple soon became inseparable, traveling around the country until they eventually settled in El Paso.
