Early voters who were lined up at the Miami Beach City Hall site on Wednesday had no idea that three floors up, commissioners had just voted to cancel a question put on the ballot by a previous commission.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. A crown jewel of South Beachs historic Art Deco scene is now at the center of a brewing battle. A proposed 200-foot, 18-story glass residential tower is proposed to be built on property right next door to the historic Raleigh Hotel, which opened in 1940 on Collins Avenue and is world-renowned for its architecture and one-of-a-kind pool. But at least one member of the historic preservation board sided with developers, arguing the tower would add to the site and keep the historic Raleigh Hotel from sitting empty and deteriorating. There is absolutely no impact on Raleigh Hotel, board member Nancy Liebman said. The purpose of having this building is to save The Raleigh.If the proposal does pass the historic preservation board it may next be heard by the planning and zoning board.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Protesters gathered Wednesday morning inside and outside Miami Beach City Hall to express their concerns about the chemical being used in aerial mosquito spraying efforts to eradicate the Zika virus. Wednesday's city commission meeting was so packed that some protesters had to sit outside and watch the meeting on TV screens. The meeting was tense, at times sounding more like a sporting event than a city commission meeting. Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Grieco has publicly criticized the use of the chemical in the county's aerial spraying. "Somebody has to be the grown up here, and I don't think it's commissioner Grieco," Rosen Gonzalez said.
