After wins by Washington and Milwaukee earlier in the day, the Mets needed a victory to stay in the playoff race. Paul Sewald (1-1), the seventh Mets pitcher, struck out two in a perfect inning for his first major league win in his 118th appearance. Mets: Bidding for a second straight NL Cy Young Award, deGrom (10-8, 2.51 ERA) makes his final scheduled start this season.

Lopez (3-7) struck out six in his longest outing since May 3, when went seven innings against Detroit. O'Hearn's double off Miami starter Pablo Lopez in the seventh gave the Royals a 2-0 advantage. Pablo Lopez (5-8) had his longest outing since returning from the injured list Aug. 26.
