Read full article: Rising water from king tides washes out business on busy Hollywood BroadwalkHOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Rising water levels due to king tides affectedseveral popular Broward areas Monday afternoon. The water flooded streets and washed out parking lots in usually busy areas by Fort Lauderdale Beach. King tides crippled businesses on the popular Hollywood Broadwalk, and all the way across State Route A1A, between the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. Traffic along State Road A1A has been bad due to the three-year repiping construction, and the rising water has made things worse. Those who live in the area are familiar with the annual king tides but have noticed a difference as rising sea levels make the waters rise higher, causing more concern.

A view from Sky 10 showed the top of the crane resting against the damaged roof of the building, which sits along a canal off the Intracoastal Waterway. He said the barge on which the crane was resting took on water, causing the crane to slide off and hit the roof of the four-story condo building. Smith lives in one of the eight units that are now off-limits while structural engineers assess the safety of the building. "Our effort now is (to) release the building from the stress it has and make (sure) that everything is safe," he said.

Florida cities build to fight rising seas
Read full article: Florida cities build to fight rising seasDelray Beach is joining other towns in the region that are developing plans to respond to the threat of rising seas, and it is finding that the defenses necessary are incredibly expensive. Earlier this year, an engineering firm delivered a report to the Delray Beach city commission that found that eliminating flooding in the city' most vulnerable neighborhoods would cost an estimated $378 million. "It will cost more than that for the state of Florida to ultimately build these defenses." There are also questions about how long South Florida can build its way out of this problem. Since receiving the report, Delray Beach says it has begun repairs to one pumping station and is developing plans to protect two more of its most flood-prone neighborhoods.
