(CNN) - Warnings of flash flooding and dangerous high winds have been issued in Europe as remnants of the record-breaking Hurricane Lorenzo approach the continent. This will make it the first hurricane to track through the mid-Atlantic archipelago since 2012. Wave heights in western Ireland are expected to reach 40 feet on Thursday and Friday. 'Life-threatening surf'One to two inches (25 to 50mm) of rainfall is expected over the western Azores on Tuesday and Wednesday, reported the NHC.

Huge Hurricane Lorenzo making waves on East Coast
Read full article: Huge Hurricane Lorenzo making waves on East CoastHurricane Lorenzo is kicking up waves along the East Coast, despite being thousands of miles away. "A HIGH RISK of dangerous and life-threatening rip currents will be present at all east central FL beaches today due to long period swell from Hurricane Lorenzo," the Melbourne office said Monday. Swell from Lorenzo could produce waves generally up to 5 feet high along the East Coast, measured from the wave trough to its peak, said Kurt Korte, the lead East Coast forecaster at Surfline.com. But dangerous swells from the storm are "spreading across much of the North Atlantic basin," the National Hurricane Center said Monday afternoon. Hurricane-force winds from Lorenzo are extending as far as 90 miles from the storm's center, and tropical storm-force winds reach as far as 255 miles outward, the hurricane center said.

Large swells from Lorenzo impacting East Coast
Read full article: Large swells from Lorenzo impacting East CoastHurricane Lorenzo is weakening as it heads in the general direction of the Azores islands in the northeast Atlantic Ocean. Large swells from the giant hurricane are propagating all the way across the ocean and impacting the East Coast -- but north of Palm Beach County on the Florida coast. The storm is tracking over relatively cooler water, but the upper winds still appear conducive enough for Lorenzo to remain unusually strong and large for tropical systems in that part of the ocean. Lorenzo is forecast still to be a hurricane when it is in the vicinity of the Azores late Tuesday or on Wednesday. This is a case where the skinny forecast cone does not tell the story, since the hurricane is so large.

PONTA DELGADA, Azores - Multiple islands in the Atlantic were under a hurricane or tropical storm watch Monday morning as Hurricane Lorenzo inched closer. Early Monday, it was about 1,160 miles from the islands and packing 110 mph winds, the National Hurricane Center said. The hurricane center called the storm "large and powerful" and warned its wind fields would continue to expand in the next few days. The storm's winds may have weakened, the hurricane center said but emphasized the "area of the hurricane-force winds has more than doubled" since Saturday.

Record-setting Hurricane Lorenzo continues swirling in northeastern Atlantic
Read full article: Record-setting Hurricane Lorenzo continues swirling in northeastern AtlanticHurricane Lorenzo is setting records for intensity in the northeastern Atlantic. HURRICANE LORENZO peaked at an incredible 160 mph, Category 5 yesterday in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean. The track that the atmosphere offered to the north happened to be over unusually warm water for that part of the ocean. So the combination of a strong circulation, ideal atmospherics, and very warm ocean waters created the superstrong hurricane. There has been a trend, in general, for unusually warm water to be farther north during hurricane season, which is contributing to stronger hurricanes at higher latitudes.

"Large and powerful Category 5 Lorenzo becomes the strongest hurricane this far north and east in the Atlantic basin," the National Hurricane Center said. But Lorenzo is still expected to be a large and potent hurricane as is approaches the Azores in a few days. By late Saturday night, Lorenzo was about 1,420 miles southwest of the Azores packing maximum sustained winds of 160 mph. Over the next few days, it's expected to spread westward to portions of the Greater Antilles, the Bahamas, Bermuda and the east coast of the United States.
