On Sunday evening’s socially distanced Emmy Awards, the Canadian comedy “Schitt’s Creek” made TV history by sweeping all of the major comedy awards it was nominated for, including all of the acting categories. “Schitt’s Creek” follows the rich Rose family, which is forced to move into a motel in the small town of Schitt’s Creek after they lose all of their money. It’s a fish out of water-type scenario, but as the Rose family begins to assimilate to the quirky town, viewers begin to fall in love with the quirky Roses. In reality, the cast of “Schitt’s Creek” should have been getting recognized by the Emmys for years now, but it was only until 2019 that the show and actors got recognized for their work. But there is no better way to go out on your last season of TV than by making history, right?

The Nielsen company said 6.1 million people watched the Emmys on Sunday night, down from 6.9 million in 2019 and the third straight year of record low viewership. Still, it illustrated how the Emmy Awards are becoming a boutique event. Last year was the first time viewership slipped under 10 million people. Viewership is also fragmented across many different networks and streaming services, and several shows don't have a wide audience.

Nobody was more thrilled than Daniel Levy, son of best actor winner Eugene Levy; the younger Levy won the award for comedy writing, shared a directing award and captured the supporting actor trophy. A CALL TO THE BOOTHLevy used some of his considerable mic time to urge viewers to vote in November. “I know this seems like a really weird time to be celebrating,” Zendaya said. Sterling K. Brown gave out the show’s final award, best drama, in a Black Lives Matter shirt.

Both Black actresses wore T-shirts featuring Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old EMT from Louisville, Kentucky, who was shot and killed by police in March. Aduba, sitting behind a table at home, wore a black T-shirt with Taylor's name in gold. Aduba wanted to give a boost to the demands for social justice that have swept the nation during the coronavirus pandemic this year. He took the stage at Staples Center wearing a black T-shirt with white letters BLM for Black Lives Matter and a white raised fist.

This year, it’s easy to cover the Emmy Awards from home because that’s where everyone else will be, too. Meanwhile, Jimmy Kimmel did his opening monologue for the 72nd Emmy Awards to what looked like a packed auditorium. 8:20 p.m.Schitt’s Creek Sweeping Up AlreadyAfter 45 years of nothing-but-funny and a six-year run down “Schitt’s Creek,” Catherine O’Hara has an acting Emmy. O’Hara won the Emmy Award for best actress in a TV comedy for her role as Rose family matriarch Moira on “Schitt’s Creek” on Sunday night. O’Hara had one previous Emmy for writing on “SCTV” in 1982 in the earlier days of years of collaboration with her “Schitt’s Creek” co-star Eugene Levy.

The HBO series won best television drama series at the Emmy Awards on Sunday night for its second season. It also won the best actor trophy for Jeremy Strong along with best writing and best directing. She won best actress in a drama for her role on HBO’s “Euphoria,” scoring one of the few long shot victories in a Sunday night full of wins from favorites. Star Regina King won best actress, her co-star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II won best supporting actor and the show’s creator Damon Lindelof won for writing. Eugene Levy won best actor, Catherine O’Hara won best actress, Annie Murphy won best supporting actress, and Levy’s son, Dan Levy, claimed three: for best supporting actor, writing and directing.

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Local 10′s “Week to Watch” wraps up with a showdown between two of college football’s fiercest rivals as Miami faces Florida State on Saturday night from Hard Rock Stadium. Local 10 has the game, which kicks off shortly after 7:30. It comes after the station also aired the Emmy Awards on Sunday night and then “Monday Night Football” and Thursday night’s Dolphins game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

LOS ANGELES – Every Emmy Award handed out Sunday will come with something extra — a $100,000 donation to fight child hunger. The Television Academy announced Friday that each network and streaming service competing on the telecast has pledged the donation for every Emmy they win. With 23 Emmys being handed out and the academy committing $500,000, that will mean a donation of $2.8 million to No Kid Hungry, a group working to relieve child hunger brought on by the coronavirus crisis. The 72nd Emmy Awards air Sunday at 5 p.m. on ABC. Guests set to appear include Anthony Anderson, Mindy Kaling, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Patrick Stuart, RuPaul and Oprah Winfrey.

The September Primetime Emmy Awards will not have a master of ceremonies, said Fox Entertainment CEO Charlie Collier on Wednesday. The decision was somewhat influenced by this year's Academy Awards, which went without an emcee for the first time since 1989. "The fact that the ratings on the Oscars were higher is because the show was shorter," Kimmel said. The 2019 Primetime Emmy Awards will be handed out September 22.
