San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera announced last week he was taking the dramatic step of suing the cityโs own school district, which has kept its classrooms closed nearly a year. In the motion filed Thursday in San Francisco Superior Court, Herrera included alarming testimony from hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area, doctors and parents on the emotional and mental harms of extended distance learning. San Franciscoโs 52,000 public school students have been out of classes since March. Public health officials have allowed city schools to reopen since September but the district and teachers unions have not been able to finalize a deal on reopening classrooms.

He says, โThe trend is favorable, but the situation is still very, very bad.โSpain has administered 1.67 million vaccine doses, with more than 586,000 people getting both doses. Iranian state TV quoted Tehranโs ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, as saying Iran has ordered 5 million doses from Russia.

Since the start of the pandemic, San Francisco has been on the cutting edge of COVID-19 restrictions. Newsom sidestepped direct comment on the San Francisco lawsuit, saying everyone is on the same page and wants to reopen schools safely.
