FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A man working at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale was diagnosed with Covid-19, the contagious respiratory illness caused by the new coronavirus. When the outbreak in Broward County began, some of the first cases reported were from people who worked at Port Everglades. Amid the growing crisis, Broward County authorities discussed the dilemma of whether or not to allow cruise ships stranded at sea to dock in the port. Members of the U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Department of Health denied the ships’ entry. On Wednesday afternoon, state public health officials reported there were more than 1,200 Covid-19 cases and 12 deaths in Broward County.

The nurses joined the #WeStayAtWorkForYou worldwide plea after Miami Beach closed hotels Friday night in preparation for a nightly curfew at the entertainment district in an effort to contain the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As of Saturday morning, the Florida Department of Health reported the Centers for Disease Control and Protection had confirmed 510 COVID-19 cases in Florida residents. According to the state data, nearly 45% of those cases were in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Officials reported 128 confirmed cases in Broward and 123 cases in Miami-Dade.

The Senate cleared a new relief package with a 90-8 vote on Wednesday. President Donald Trump said he is ready to sign the new bill, which had bipartisan support. The $1 trillion plan is meant to cover the cost of testing for COVID-19, extend paid sick and family leave and strengthen unemployment insurance. The Treasury Department expects to be able to send direct payments to workers who are facing a financial loss because of COVID-19 by early next month.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Public health officials announced on Tuesday night there are eight new positive COVID-19 cases in Florida -- where two COVID-19 patients have already died in Santa Rosa and Lee counties. With the eight new cases in Nassau, Alachua, Collier, Pinellas and Pasco counties, Florida’s total count of positive cases of COVID-19 increased to 28. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday the COVID-19 cases in Florida are largely related to international travel, according to Helen Aguirre, a spokeswoman for DeSantis’ office. Most of the COVID-19 patients in Florida are in their 60s and 70s. The youngest Florida residents who are ill are a 29-year-old woman in Hillsborough County and a 46-year-old man in Pasco County.

Martin, a 34-year-old private meteorologist from Corona, California, told CNN that the man approached him at the bar on Thursday and asked if they could speak outside. As the two headed outside, another man followed, took out a phone and showed Martin a police sketch. Four in the face, two in the jaw and one in forehead," Martin told CNN. Martin made a citizen's arrest, according to a County of Riverside Sheriff's Department Order of Arrest.
