It was a tribute to the late Corey Smith, a beloved football coach at Miami Senior High School and a Miami-Dade Public Schools employee for more than two decades. The unveiling of the “Cleaning Out My Locker” portrait was on display during the half-time of a high school football game between Miami Senior High’s Stingarees and Miami Norland Senior High’s Vikings. A 15-year-old boy is accused of killing Smith on Sept. 21 while trying to steal $7,450 from his home, 2140 NW 97th St., in West Little River. Green said the portrait belongs to the school and it will be on display at every Miami High football game this season.

NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – A Miami Senior High School football coach was murdered with his own gun by a teen who he considered to be his nephew, according to an arrest affidavit. Smith considered him to be like a brother, according to police. There is no word on a motive, but detectives said they did find more than $7,000 of Smith’s money hidden in the 15-year-old boy’s clothes. Detectives discovered jeans containing $7,450 inside the pocket that were discovered inside of a plastic garbage bag inside the home. The attorney said that the teen fell through the cracks despite all of his family’s efforts to get him help.

MIAMI – Miami-Dade detectives arrested a teenage suspect in the murder of the 46-year-old Miami Senior High School head football coach. According to Detective Alvaro Zabaleta, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade Police Department, the arrest of the suspect in Corey Smith’s murder was on Thursday. A relative at Smith’s home confirmed on Thursday night that a teenage boy was arrested in his murder, which made the crime all the more tragic. While coaching children and teenagers, he developed a reputation as a mentor who helped to propel players to have college football and NFL careers. Zabaleta said on Monday detectives questioned a 15-year-old boy who was in the home when Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel found Smith dead.

He is the son of Lamar Alexander, one of two suspects killed in the hijacking of a UPS truck driver last December. Detective Alvaro Zabaleta said on Monday that the teen was not injured in the shooting Monday. Detectives have been in and out of Smith’s Northwest Miami-Dade home since Monday and were back on the scene Wednesday morning, collecting evidence. “Coach Corey,” as he was known, worked for 20 years for Miami-Dade Public Schools, most recently as head football coach at Miami Senior High School. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the fatal shooting to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
