WASHINGTON The University of Notre Dame has become the second university to withdraw as the host of one of this fall's three scheduled presidential debates amid the coronavirus pandemic. The university was set to host the inaugural face-off between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden on Sept. 29. The first debate will now be hosted by Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates announced Monday. The commission has selected Cleveland Clinic as its health adviser for all three presidential debates and the one scheduled vice presidential debate. John Jenkins said the university made this difficult decision because the necessary health precautions would have greatly diminished the educational value of hosting the debate on our campus.The University of Michigan was scheduled to host the second presidential debate but withdrew last month.

WESTON, Fla. Along with clinical trials into the use of convalescent plasma, Cleveland Clinic Florida is now launching two new clinical investigations that could potentially help COVID-19 patients. The hospital is testing the use of Vitamin C and Zinc to see if they shorten the duration and type of symptoms, and prevent the hospitalizations of patients with the virus. Participants, who must be 18 years of age or older, not pregnant and in good health, will be given the supplements within 48 hours of a positive test and then monitored for two weeks. The goal is to enroll 520 participants in the study. The hospital is also conducting a study on an antibody medication specifically for COVID-19 patients whove suffered a heart attack to see if it can prevent further damage to the heart.

Dr. Jihad Kaouk and his team were the first hospital in the country to successfully perform a robotic single-port prostatectomy and kidney cancer surgery in September 2018. This robotic single-port technique could be an alternative for patients dealing with obesity or challenging anatomy, doctors say.

It was the first time the Cleveland Clinic did the surgery laparoscopically making a few tiny incisions in the abdomen to remove a piece of the liver. CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland Clinic just completed a unique liver transplant surgery, and they're hoping it encourages more people to step forward to help save lives. The surgery was done by Dr. Choon Hyuck David Kwon, who said only about 5 % of liver donations come from living donors. Dr. Kwon, the director of Laparoscopic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, said he hopes the minimally invasive surgery encourages more donors to consider making a liver donation. The surgery was done in August, with Nikko Velazquez donating a piece his liver to his girlfriend's father, Abraham Aviv.

"Living donor transplant is for someone who's sick and needs a transplant but they have to be able to tolerate getting only a partial liver. "Living donor liver transplant surgery is very risky but, thankfully, the complication rate is not high enough that we need to worry about the donor going into liver failure," said Vanatta. Cleveland Clinic Ohio is the second academic medical center to perform a purely laparoscopic living donor surgery for liver transplant. The minimally invasive technique benefits the living donor, who has better post-op recovery, less pain, smaller scars and lower risk of complications.
