During the spacewalk, Koch was actually able to ride on the end of the robotic arm, something not many astronauts have the opportunity to do. Meir arrived on the space station for her first six-month mission at the beginning of October. Koch and Meir are included in the list of 12 women that could be the first female astronaut on the moon in 2024. She can check "becoming an astronaut" and "going for a spacewalk" off her "future plans" list from high school.

Koch is the lead astronaut, making her fourth spacewalk,and is wearing a suit with red stripes and Helmet Cam 18. Meir, making her first walk, is wearing a suit with no stripes, and will be wearing Helmet Cam 11. Rounding out the team are Drew Morgan, helping the pair suit up, and Luca Parmitano, running the robotic arm. The suits weight about 300 pounds, according to NASA officials, equipped with everything the women need to survive in space.

Upon watching the spacewalk begin, NASA astronaut Tracy Dyson said she hopes this is just the first all-female spacewalk and that it becomes a normal occurrence. The first woman to conduct a spacewalk was Russian cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya in 1984, followed closely by NASA astronaut Kathy Sullivan. This is the second attempt at an all-female spacewalk after the first was scrapped in March.

The announcement was made Friday during a briefing by the agency previewing 10 upcoming spacewalks by astronauts on the International Space Station. For the intended spacewalk in March, Koch was going to be paired with astronaut Anne McClain, who has since returned to Earth. The tweet also showed an image of pairings for the upcoming spacewalks. In addition to her first spacewalk with Koch, she will also conduct a spacewalk with European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano.
