PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Financial scams targeting seniors are prevalent and the Florida Office of Financial Regulation says with more than 4.9 million people ages 60 and older, Florida ranks first in the nation in the percentage of its citizens who are seniors. "Unfortunately, wealth is one of the reasons scammers target unsuspecting senior citizens," Florida Office of Financial Regulation officials said. The National Council on Aging (NCOA) states that "Financial scams targeting seniors have become so prevalent that they're now considered 'the crime of the 21st century.' A Local 10 viewer who decided to Call Christina said he got "ripped off" by a man once dubbed a "golf cart con man." 'This guy is ripping me off'When Gary Dubeck of Key West dropped more than $6,000 on a golf cart he ordered with the Golf Cart Warehouse, his contract stated it would be "street legal." Dubeck, who is now spending more money to fix the golf cart, told Local 10 News, "I want what I bought." The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration allows a golf cart to be converted to a low-speed vehicle. But once he had the golf cart, he learned it was a 2012 model based on the serial number on the Club Car golf cart.

This Call Christina investigation was prompted by a call into the hotline about deplorable living conditions at Arms of Hope. On its website, Arms of Hope Recovery and Transitional Home stated it had three locations in Broward County. As Local 10 News investigative reporter Christina Vazquez began to dig into claims the company made on its own website, Arms of Hope wiped its website clean, deleting all text. On a URL page with a header that stated, “A Secure Environment," the Arms of Hope website claimed, “Arms of Hope wants to make sure that all residents are safe in our facilities. establishes a voluntary certification program for recovery residences• The Florida Association of Recovery Residences, Inc. is currently approved by the department as a credentialing entity for recovery residences.

NHTSA continues to investigate which manufacture models have Takata inflators and get a handle on how many more vehicles might have to be recalled. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports the bottles were sold exclusively at Target "during the 'Back-to-College' promotion nationwide from June 2015 through July 2015 for about $10." Mold number "14158" and "Zak Designs®" are embossed on the bottom of the bottles in the recall. The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the handle of the pizza cutter can detach during use, posing a laceration hazard.

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – South Florida continues to be a hotbed for impostor scams. Every day, many South Floridians receive phone calls from people claiming to be from the IRS or a debt collection agency. In one case, a viewer played an audio recording of the call he received from a man claiming to be from the IRS. The message warned the viewer that it was his final notice to pay a certain amount of money before he received a lawsuit. Local 10 News investigative reporter Christina Vazquez sat down with Cindy Liebes, director of the Southeast Regional Office of the Federal Trade Commission, who said impostor scams are on the rise.

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – The Federal Trade Commission is mailing 2,653 checks totaling more than $467,000 to consumers who lost money in a mortgage-relief scheme. Federal prosecutors also approved settlements with five other defendants in the case. Nine defendants behind the Crowder Law Group were charged with violating the Federal Trade Commission Act and the telemarketing sales rule. Check amounts will vary based upon each consumer's loss. Those who receive the checks from the FTC are advised to deposit or cash them within 60 days of the mailing date.

County records show the Class A General Builder license number listed on the front door for the Broward County business expired in 2008. Additionally, licensees can file an unlicensed activity complaint with DBPR against the individual or company using their license number. MIAMI – When John Sabina was in the market for a house rental he searched online listings and stumbled upon a great home in the Country Walk area of Miami-Dade County. The supposed homeowner had moved to Scotland and said the monthly rental price was $1,400, utilities included. Sabina contacted his sister Juliana Sabina Morejon who is a realtor with the Keller Williams-Coral Gables/Coconut Grove office. The person Sabina was corresponding with wanted him to send money through a website called DepositProtection.com It's a service for landlords in England and Wales.

"As soon as they finished, it rained and there was a whole film of water," Baker said. Fourth of July was supposed to be at my house and several other events I had to reschedule because we couldn't use the patio," Baker said. Baker attempted to contact the company for months by phone and by certified mail. According to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, two other people filed complaints regarding unfinished services the company refused to address. "BBB's report on JDP Construction, Inc. has been placed on update while we review the customer complaints on file," the statement reads.

If you receive a request from an unfamiliar group, first check the name to make sure it's legitimate. Then go to the group's website to see how it spends donations and make sure that charity supports the issues that matter to you. Lastly, you can make sure the group is eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions on the Internal Revenue Service wesbite.

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Many people offer help with immigration services, but not all are authorized to do so. Citizenship and Immigration Services is warning of potential scams. U.S. officials began the Unauthorized Practice of Immigration Law initiative to identify resources that can help people avoid becoming victims of such scams.
