Shane Owens had passed away after a battle with COVID-19. Owens served the Broward Sheriff’s Office Department of Detention for nearly 30 years, according to BSO. “He was one of those dedicated employees who helped colleagues and supervisors do their jobs better,” “I remember years ago arriving in Central Intake and Sgt. Owens was instrumental in helping me become acclimated with the Central Intake operations.”

A South Florida firefighter is leading the way in an effort to raise funding and awareness to help combat lung disease. In his career as a firefighter, Peter Berger has faced many challenges but he never gave much thought to his own health until 2008. He’s accepted the diagnosis but said lung disease doesn’t define him. Proceeds from this years’ events, here and around the country, will also support the American Lung Associations new COVID-19 action initiative.

Read full article: Deputies identify gunman who shot at BSO vehicle in West ParkWEST PARK, Fla. – Authorities are investigating after a gunman fired a single shot in the direction of a Broward County Sheriff’s deputy, narrowly missing the deputy and his car. According to BSO spokeswoman Gerdy St. Louis, the deputy spotted a suspicious vehicle sitting behind a beauty supply store. St. Louis said the driver then got back into his car and fled the scene, heading north along State Road 7 in Hollywood. The deputy followed Dabrezil and other deputies joined in the pursuit, St. Louis said. According to BSO, deputies and officers with the Hollywood Police Department set up a perimeter in the 5900 block of Dewey Street, but Dabrezil and his passenger were not found.

Before he was Broward County Sheriff, Israel was police chief in North Bay Village. It’s unclear when the new chief will be selected in Bay Harbor Islands.

Read full article: Inmate at Broward jail tests positive for COVID-19POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A male inmate housed at a Broward County jail tested positive for the new coronavirus Wednesday, according to Broward Sheriff’s Office. The inmate was arrested and booked into BSO’s North Broward Bureau sometime in March, according to a report. The BSO did not disclose which hospital the inmate was sent to, but it was there that he tested positive for COVID-19. BSO says medical staff will continue to monitor inmates for any signs and symptoms of COVID-19. The primary mission of the facility, according to BSO’s website, is to house and manage the mentally ill, medically infirm and special needs inmate population.
