In a lengthy discussion Tuesday, the Broward County School Board postponed the vote on whether to suspend or terminate a Broward Schools employee and mother of a transgender athlete.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Broward County Schools Superintendent Robert Runcie calls it a balance of three realities: Concern for teachers’ health, making sure failing students get ahead academically, and limiting virus spread in schools. But the topic that’s top of mind is a lawsuit filed by the Broward Teachers’ Union. President Anna Fusco held a press conference Thursday, where she announced BTU filed suit against Broward Schools in response to a decision by the district to end an agreement. The agreement covered special work-from-home accommodations for teachers and support staff with serious medical conditions. Both the district and the union agree on one thing: that teachers should be at the front of the line for the COVID-19 vaccine.

MIAMI – Cases of COVID-19 have been climbing in South Florida schools since students returned to in-person learning. The Broward County Schools dashboard shows 20 recent cases and 61 in the last 30 days. The schools with the most are Nova Dwight D. Eisenhower and Indian Ridge Middle School, both with three cases. In Miami-Dade County, the dashboard shows 77 cases, with Ethel Beckham Elementary at the top of the list with four cases. In Broward, state records show Hochberg preparatory in Hallandale with the most cases, showing eight.

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. Despite some minor glitches, Broward County Schools is celebrating a successful first day that kicked off online. Her mom, Sarah, was there by her side. Sarahs youngest brother, Zachary, lives in the same home. The 15-year-old also started school online Wednesday; hes a sophomore at Coral Springs Charter. At a different Broward home, 12-year-old Zoe Gobbi started 7th grade at the same school as Zachary.
