It was back on July 21 of 2019 when Deputy Nimtz drove his patrol SUV with lights and sirens heading to a domestic dispute call around 3 a.m. That driver, 32-year-old Darran Johnson, is facing charges of vehicular homicide, DUI manslaughter and 11 other criminal counts and infractions. Deputy Nimtz only had three shifts left to work before he was heading to Indiana to join his wife and two kids. On Saturday, motorcycle riders will be followed by a customized truck towing a 28-foot trailer with graphics depicting the fallen.

Darran Johnson was outfitted with an ankle monitor after his arrest and was ordered not to consume alcohol. Investigators said he was behind the wheel of his Toyota Tundra when it crashed into Deputy Benjamin Nimtz's marked patrol car in Deerfield Beach. As the deputy entered the intersection, Johnson ran the red light and crashed into the passenger side of Nimtz’s patrol car, authorities said. Nimtz and Johnson were both taken to Broward Health North after the crash.

Authorities said Darran Johnson, 32, was arrested at BSO's Central Broward district office in Fort Lauderdale. Authorities said Nimtz had his emergency lights and siren activated as he was heading south on Military Trail approaching the intersection of Southwest 10th Street. As the deputy entered the intersection, Johnson ran the red light and struck the passenger side of Nimtz's patrol vehicle, detectives said. Nimtz and Johnson were both taken to Broward Health North after the crash.

The funeral for Deputy Benjamin Nimtz was held at Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale. A funeral procession for the deputy left West Palm Beach en route to Fort Lauderdale. Nimtz, who lived in West Palm Beach with his wife and two children, was on his way to a domestic disturbance call at the time of the crash.

BSO spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said Nimtz's cruiser collided with a Toyota Tundra pickup truck at the intersection. Bell said Nimtz's wife and two children, ages 18 months and 3 years, had already moved back to Indiana to settle into their new home. Bell said Nimtz's wife was traveling to South Florida.
