The jury, made up of six men and six women, deliberated for "several hours" before reaching the death sentence recommendation, the office said in a release. A second murder victim, Mario Bruno, a neighbor of Gargiulo's, was killed and mutilated in December 2005. Gargiulo's sentencing is scheduled for February 28, the DA's office said. He has also been charged in a 1993 slaying in the Chicago area, the DA's office said.

The trial surrounding what became known as Hollywood Ripper killings began in Los Angeles in May, as lawyers for the prosecution and the defense framed their arguments. The 43-year-old was charged with the murders of Ashley Ellerin and Maria Bruno, in addition to the attempted murder of Michelle Murphy in 2008. Defense attorney Daniel Nardoni argued prosecutors had no evidence to link Gargiulo to Ellerin's murder. Gargiulo was also linked to the murder of Bruno, whose ex-husband discovered her mutilated body in 2005, KABC said.
