CNN(CNN) - After more than 30 years with the Chicago Police, Superintendent Eddie Johnson is expected to announce that he is retiring, according to a department spokesman. Eddie Johnson will announce plans to retire as leader of the nation's second-largest police department," CPD Chief Communications Officer Anthony Guglielmi tweeted Thursday morning. According to CNN affiliate WLS, Johnson suggested he was considering retirement at a budget hearing earlier this week. The police superintendent said he thought he felt ill because of a change in his blood pressure medication. He told Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot that he "had a couple of drinks with dinner."

The incident was cleared by the squad and no one was injured, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a tweet. The bag had been run over by a luggage vehicle and the item did not combust or explode on its own, he said. "Thanks to everyone for being vigilant and to the firefighters, officers and technicians who assisted," Guglielmi said. There was no impact on flight traffic, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said.

AlexRaths /iStockphoto.com(CNN) - The man who allegedly shot a Chicago police officer on Saturday has been charged with four counts of attempted murder in that shooting as well as the shooting of a young girl last week, police said. The 40-year-old officer with the department's fugitive apprehension unit was part of a team trying to arrest Blackman in connection with a separate shooting, Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said. After Blackman's arrest, Guglielmi posted photos of a pistol recovered from the scene. "He posed a clear and present danger to the people of Chicago," Guglielmi said. Police say Blackman shot a woman Wednesday morning in the city's Fulton River District while he was riding a bicycle.

(CNN) - A Chicago police officer was in surgery after being shot Saturday morning -- and officers are searching for whoever pulled the trigger, authorities said. The officer was shot on the city's South Side -- the 1900 block of West 65th Street -- by someone who was believed to have been a fugitive, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said on Twitter. The officer was taken to a hospital, where he or she was "completing surgery and is in stable condition," Guglielmi said. "(The) offender has fled and is considered armed and dangerous," Guglielmi said. Chicago police, US marshals and ATF agents are looking for the shooter, Guglielmi said.

Getty Images(CNN) - A 17-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department apparently took his own life Monday night, becoming the force's fourth officer this year to die by suicide, police said. "Debilitating news for the #ChicagoPolice family as we come to grips with the unthinkable loss of a dedicated police officer to suicide tonight," Guglielmi tweeted Monday night. Patrols in the Rogers Park neighborhood will not be affected if colleagues of the officer are overcome with grief, Guglielmi said. The New York Police Department has also been shaken by a spate of officer suicides. Of nine NYPD officer suicides in 2019, seven have happened since June, with department brass looking for ways to tell the rank and file that it's OK to ask for help.

Scott Olson/Getty Images(CNN) - Chicago's Mount Sinai Hospital temporarily stopped accepting patients Sunday morning because they were at capacity following a series of shootings, a hospital official said. The hospital went "on bypass" in the early morning, said Roberta Rakove, Senior VP for External Affairs. Mount Sinai Hospital is one of five trauma centers in Chicago, according to Rakove. At its height early Sunday morning, Mount Sinai had 12 trauma patients, Rakove said. Rakove could not say when Mount Sinai Hospital went "on bypass," but said it came "off bypass" at approximately 6:30 am.

WLS via CNN(CNN) - The alligator that somehow ended up in Chicago's Humboldt Park has finally been caught. Chance the Snapper, as he came to be known, had been on the loose in the park for almost a week -- forcing a partial shutdown of the site. Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told CNN Tuesday the alligator was caught sometime overnight. The city brought in St. Augustine, Florida, alligator expert Frank Robb on Sunday to help capture Chance. The alligator had last been seen on Thursday around 1 a.m.The-CNN-Wire & 2019 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company.

Three people were stabbed and 13 others were hospitalized after being trampled while exiting a fireworks display at Navy Pier, Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Spicuzza said in a news release Friday morning that a fight broke out among a group of men at the fireworks display after someone displayed "gang signs." A 14-year-old boy was stabbed in the arm and rib, according to Spicuzza, and a 15-year-old boy was stabbed in the armpit. About 13 people were injured after being trampled, according to police. Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi previously said 16 were hospitalized after being trampled while leaving the fireworks.

(CNN) - Eric Trump, son of President Donald Trump, said Tuesday he was spit on by an employee at a Chicago-area restaurant. The Chicago Police Department was on the scene and assisted Secret Service, per CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. Eric Trump cast blame for the incident, which took place at upscale cocktail bar and restaurant Aviary, more broadly on the Democratic Party. Trump, who, along with his brother, leads their father's real estate business, was in town for a visit to Trump Hotel Chicago. While this is the first such reported incident targeting Eric Trump, members of the Trump administration have previously faced confrontations at the dinner table.
