The U.S. base is located in the south of the East African nation, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of Mogadishu. American forces use the base to train Somali commando units. Somali National Army Radio reported that Somali forces and their U.S. partners had "repelled" the coordinated terrorist assault. Al-Shabaab militants claimed responsibility for the attack on the U.S. base, according to the group's affiliated website, Somalia Memo.

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Three people were killed in a foiled attack Wednesday against a newly established military camp near Mogadishu, Somali army officials said. The attack happened hours after Somali state-run media reported that Al-Shabaab's spokesman, Sheikh Ali Dheere, was wounded Sunday during a military operation in Awdheegle. Al-Shabaab is a Somali group that the United States in 2008 designated as a foreign terrorist organization. Nearly 30 people were killed that same month when armed men stormed a hotel in the port city of Kismayo in Jubaland state.

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Abdirahman Omar Osman, the mayor of Somalia's capital Mogadishu, succumbed to wounds sustained in a suicide bombing in the city, the government said on Thursday. Osman died at a hospital in Qatar where he had been undergoing treatment since July 25 following the bomb attack on a government building in the city. Al-Shabaab has launched many deadly attacks in Somalia targeting public places, including hotels and an airport. Prominent journalist and Youtube star, Hodan Nalayeh and her husband and other top government officials were among those who died in the Kismayo attack.
