Immigration enforcement is now local.
Several South Florida police departments have signed agreements to assist federal immigration agents in their cities. That is part of the 287-G agreements you may have heard about.
The agreements are not new, but on the fast-track since last month when new state immigration law aligned with Trump administration policy.
Technically they are opt- in, as in a choice, though consequences are unclear for departments not opting in.
Florida has more police departments than any other state participating in the agreements, sheriffs in all 67 Florida counties, and in the last week, Hialeah, Davie, Sunny Isles, Key West, Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens all signed on.
Coral Gables was the first Miami-Dade city to opt-in, at the advice of Police Chief Ed Hudak, who is also the legislative chair for the Florida Association of Police Chiefs.
Hudak joined This Week in South Florida host Glenna Milberg to discuss, and their discussion can be seen at the top of this page.
