PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – The Florida House bill that makes school vouchers available to all is called HB-1.
It’s sailing through committees, as the priority bill of leadership.
Every Florida student, Kindergartener through high school senior, would have the opportunity to get state money to choose private school or even home school instead of the neighborhood public school.
Supporters say that kind state-funded choice levels the playing field for all families.
Opponents fear the demise of Florida’s public schools.
What it would all cost was a big debate this week in the house Pre-K-to-12 appropriations committee where they crunch the numbers.
Two state Representatives on that committee from South Florida are ranking Democrat Patricia Williams from Pompano Beach and Republican Rep. Vicki Lopez from Miami.
They joined This Week in South Florida host Glenna Milberg to discuss the bill, and their conversation can be seen at the top of this page.
