Miami Heat legend Alonzo Mourning has prostate removed after cancer diagnosis

Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame center Alonzo Mourning has undergone surgery to have his prostate removed after being diagnosed with Stage 3 prostate cancer, ESPN reported Monday.

According to ESPN’s report, testing revealed the cancer did not spread beyond the prostate.

Mourning told the outlet that he had the removal procedure in March and is now cancer free.

Mourning is a 7-time All-Star, an NBA champion and an Olympic gold medalist.

He played most of his NBA career with the Miami Heat.

Mourning told ESPN in an interview that he is encouraging routine prostate cancer screening for men and that he is determined to be an advocate for at-risk men.

“What scares me about this disease is that there are so many men walking around feeling great and have that cancer in them and they don’t know it,” Mourning told ESPN. “The only way to find out is to get their blood tested and get their PSA checked. There are 3.3 million men living in the U.S. with prostate cancer, and many don’t even know it. I was one of those guys.”
