The Miami Herald's Barry Jackson reported that Johnson sent a text to UM athletic director Blake James and offered to be a "sounding board."

Local 10 News contacted Jimmy Johnson to inquire about the exact nature of his involvement.

"No involvement," Johnson replied. "I just offered my help."

Johnson coached the Hurricanes from 1984-88, leading Miami to a 52-9 record in five seasons and a national championship in 1987. He also coached the Miami Dolphins from 1996-99.

The Hurricanes fired Al Golden after losing to Clemson, 58-0.

Interim head coach Larry Scott will finish out the season for Miami.
