MIAMI – Florida International head coach Butch Davis announced the first newcomer to his staff Tuesday.
Davis said former Utah State head coach Brent Guy will serve as defensive coordinator for the Panthers in 2017.
"Brent Guy has a fabulous defensive background," Davis said in a statement. "He brings a ton of experience as a former head coach and defensive coordinator. He does an excellent job of building relationships with his players."
Guy most recently spent the 2015 season as the safeties coach at Memphis, helping the Tigers finish 9-4 with a berth in the Birmingham Bowl.
He joined Memphis after four seasons as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Tulsa. During his time at Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane won the 2012 Conference USA championship and beat Iowa State in the Liberty Bowl.
Guy spent four seasons as head coach at Utah State, but he was fired after the 2008 season with an overall record of 9-38.
Other coaching stops include Oklahoma State, Boise State, Arizona State, Louisville and UNLV.
The former Oklahoma State walk-on linebacker is the third member of Davis' staff, joining secondaries coach Bobby Babich and running backs coach Tim Harris Jr. Babich and Harris spent the 2016 season with the Panthers.
