Manso: Is this the year 'Canes break losing streak to 'Noles?

Local 10 sports director Will Manso makes his game prediction

MIAMI – Sept. 7, 2009.  That's over eight years ago.

That's also the last time Miami beat Florida State on the football field. It's been far too long. Somehow, it's felt even longer than that.

For UM fans, the agony of this drought feels like it's been an eternity.

The 'Canes enter the 2017 matchup Saturday in Tallahassee undefeated and ranked 13th in the country.  FSU enters with just one ugly win and a freshman quarterback with little experience.

If you ever had a perfect formula to end this misery, this would be the one.

Of course, nothing is ever perfect when it comes to this rivalry.

There's always a missed field goal, blocked kick, key interception or wild comeback when these two teams play.

It's just what this rivalry is all about.

Last season's game looked like Miami was finally ready to pull off a win. Up 13-3 at the half at home and with multiple chances to put the game away, the 'Canes still managed to blow it.

Why do I feel this time will be different?

For one, the 'Canes really do appear to have a more complete team at the moment.

Quarterback Malik Rosier, while not a Heisman Trophy-type player, is proving to be a very solid leader on the field. He's shown the ability to run, and he throws a really nice ball. Will he win this game on his own? No. He will need help. But he's smart enough to avoid the key mistakes to lose the game for you.

Meanwhile, FSU QB James Blackman really does look like a freshman. It's a tough spot for him. Miami's defense is fast, hard-hitting and knows how to confuse opposing QBs in Manny Diaz's scheme. This will be a major challenge for a player who just doesn't seem ready for this spotlight yet.

The difference, though, in this game is Mark Walton. Unlike Rosier, he really is a guy who can win a game for you. He's doing it all for the 'Canes, rushing and receiving.

It's no secret he's the weapon UM will turn to early and often to set the tone for the game.

As Florida State and Miami prepare to do battle once more, Local10.com takes a look back at some of the most memorable games in the history of the rivalry.

While the 'Noles defense is still very good, if FSU's offense struggles, the defense will wear down as the game continues with Walton on the attack.

I picked Miami last season and the 'Canes fell short again.

Seven losses in a row is enough.

Miami still leads the all-time series 31-30 in 61 meetings, so the Seminoles have a shot to even up this great rivalry.

On their home field, I expect the 'Noles to keep this a close game, as always. The last three matchups between these two teams have been decided by 10 points combined.

I'll sound like a broken record, but Miami finally ends the drought.

Barely.

Prediction: Miami 24-20
