The Hurricanes switched spots with No. 3 Clemson (10-1), which was ranked second last week.
Miami and the Tigers will meet Dec. 2 in the ACC Championship game. Barring an upset this weekend, the winner of that game would likely make the four-team College Football Playoff.
The Hurricanes jumped into the top four last week after an impressive victory against then-No. 3 Notre Dame. They struggled early in their home finale against Virginia last Saturday but rallied for a 44-28 victory.
"We start with a clean sheet of paper each and every week," CFP selection committee chairman Kirby Hocutt told ESPN.
Hocutt said there are "narrow margins" of separation between the top five teams.
Alabama (11-0) remained the top-ranked team, while Oklahoma (10-1) is ranked No. 4.
Wisconsin (11-0) is the next team up at No. 5.
Miami will conclude its regular season Friday at Pittsburgh.
