Wade posted on his Instagram page that he was diagnosed with Stage 1 cancer in December of 2023.

He said his diagnosis meant losing 40% of his kidney.

“It’s a scary thing to face,” Wade wrote in the post. “My dad’s own health journey taught me the importance of being proactive.”

Wade used his announcement to urge other men to “prioritize your health and get checked.”

Wade played 17 seasons in the NBA, including 15 with the Heat, the team that drafted him third overall in 2003.

Wade was a 13-time NBA All-Star and three-time NBA Champion. He won a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023.
