Tua Tagovailoa’s status for Jets game is still unclear because of hip injury

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins know the Playoff situation.

The Fins need to beat the Jets on Sunday and have the Chiefs beat the Broncos.

If that happens, the Dolphins know that they’ll earn the No. 7 AFC Playoff seed.

There are, however, big questions about the quarterback position.

Starter Tua Tagovailoa sat out against the Browns on Sunday because of a hip injury.

Backup Tyler Huntley led the Dolphins to a 20-3 win over the Browns.

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel talked about Tagovailoa’s injury on Monday.

McDaniel said, “It was about the timing when the game was relative to his recovery process from the last week, which was a different timeline from the week previous.”

McDaniel said that this leaves the team “firmly in the unknown.”

The Dolphins head coach said that team doctors always have the final say if it is safe for a player to go or not.

On Tua’s hip, McDaniel said, “It didn’t improve as we were forecasting. Not necessarily worse, you were expecting things to progress and sometimes the body could care less about your expectations.”

McDaniel said, “It was not safe at all based on a litany of things that his body was vulnerable to.”

McDaniel said that the Dolphins will give more practice reps to Huntley than Tagovailoa this week, but they’ll continue to monitor the starter’s progress.
