Dru Smith undergoes surgery, hopes to return by next season

MIAMI – Heat guard Dru Smith had successful surgery on Friday, according to the team.

He had a procedure to repair a torn left achilles tendon.

Smith will miss the remainder of the season.

He went down during the Heat’s game against the Brooklyn Nets on Dec. 23.

Smith was playing on a two-way contract with the Heat.

The guard had been a standout this season averaging 6.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

He was also shooting 50/8 percent from the field and a team-high 53.3 percent from 3.
