MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Veteran edge rusher Shaq Barrett could return to the field before the 2024 season ends, but it likely won’t be with the Miami Dolphins.

Barrett, who retired ahead of the 2024 season, expressed interest in returning late last month.
His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, confirmed to ESPN Thursday that the Dolphins have agreed to waive him.
While the Dolphins initially chose not to activate or release Barrett, they have now changed their stance.
According to sources, if Barrett clears waivers and signs with another team, he will be eligible to play in Week 18 and the postseason. However, if he’s claimed, he would remain on the reserve/retired list and would be ineligible to play.
“We appreciate the Dolphins giving Shaq this opportunity to continue his career in the NFL,” Rosenhaus said. “Hopefully, he will pass through waivers and become a free agent so he can play again this season. He is in great shape and would be ready to play immediately.”
Barrett, who recorded 4.5 sacks with the Buccaneers last season, has 59 career sacks.
His experience could add depth to a team’s pass rush, especially for a contender looking to boost its defense during the playoffs.
It remains to be seen if another team will claim him off waivers, as doing so would prevent him from returning to action with a new team.
