“We have been made aware that Highsmith was involved in a car accident heading home from last night’s game,” a Miami Heat spokesperson confirmed. “Highsmith is listed as out for tonight’s contest against the San Antonio Spurs due to personal reasons.”
South Florida sports radio host Andy Slater first reported that a senior law enforcement source confirmed that Highsmith drove into a person who was helping another driver who was stuck in the middle of the road on Tuesday night.
The man who was hit is in critical condition and suffered a partial amputation of his leg, sources told Slater.
The Heat did not disclose any details about the accident, though the team did say “our hearts go out to those who were injured.”
It remains unclear if Highsmith will miss any extended time due to the situation.
Highsmith is coming off a game where he scored 3 points against the Washington Wizards but recorded a season-high 27 minutes in Sunday’s 103-95 loss against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Highsmith, 27, is in his third season with the Heat. While he’s often been used off the bench during his time with the team, he’s started 24 games in the 2023-24 season due to the Heat’s health issues. He’s averaging 5.8 points and 2.8 rebounds in 20.7 minutes per game this season.
Tipoff for Wednesday night’s game at the Kaseya Center is set for 7:30 p.m.
