MINNEAPOLIS ā€“ James Harden had just hit a stepback 3-pointer while being fouled, a move seen countless times from the 10-time All-Star and 2018 MVP. Joel Embiid, his new teammate, raised both hands and met up with Harden at midcourt for a hug.

Philadelphia liked seeing Hardenā€™s 3-and-ones finally help the 76ers, and they enjoyed the first exposure of general manager Daryl Moreyā€™s experiment to put the two stars together.

Harden had 27 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds in his 76ers debut, Joel Embiid added 34 points and 10 rebounds and Philadelphia routed the Minnesota Timberwolves 133-102 on Friday night.

ā€œWe're unselfish, we just want to win,ā€ Harden said. ā€œWe've got guys, from top to bottom, that it feels that way on the court. Great things are going to happen more times than not. My job is to come in and add to each individual on this team."

The wait proved worth it after Harden missed his first two games with the 76ers following the trade from Brooklyn with a hamstring injury. The results were promising, particularly where Embiid and Harden thrive ā€” at the free-throw line.

Embiid, who had 21 free throws in a double-overtime loss to Minnesota in November, was 11 of 13 from the line. Harden was 8 of 9 as the 76ers went 30 of 36 overall.

ā€œThatā€™s what I expected,ā€ said Embiid, smiling wide as the two shared a postgame press conference table. ā€œIā€™ve never been wide open like this in my life. Seriously, the passing, like I wasnā€™t even expecting it and it was just coming.ā€

Karl-Anthony Towns led Minnesota with 25 points, and Dā€™Angelo Russell had 21. But the Timberwolves couldnā€™t replicate the dramatic win in Philadelphia earlier this season.

ā€œThe most costly thing tonight, and it might not be on the stat sheet, was that we were looking for shortcuts all night long,ā€ Minnesota coach Chris Finch said. ā€œWe come down, one pass, try to make a home run play on offense. And more than anything it was our offense that let us down, really.ā€

The 76ers didnā€™t have Harden ā€” or Ben Simmons, who was traded to Brooklyn along with Seth Curry, Andre Drummond and two first-round draft picks for Harden ā€” in November.

Harden, the 2018 MVP, hadnā€™t played since Feb. 2 due to the injury, delaying his pairing with Embiid. Philadelphia believes it finally has the top-level duo, and a strong third piece in Tobias Harris, to break through in the Eastern Conference.

The 76ers have won four of five.

In Philadelphiaā€™s first game following the All-Star break, Embiid controlled the first quarter from the line. He was 7-of-8 shooting on free throws and had 10 points and six rebounds in the quarter.

The 76ers used a 15-0 run to take a 16-6 lead and never trailed again.

Minnesota, coming off a 119-114 win over Memphis a night earlier, got to 51-48 late in the second quarter. But Philadelphia closed the half on a 15-1 run after Mattisse Thybulle had a putback dunk right before the buzzer off a missed 3-pointer from Harris.

ā€œI feel the way we lost tonight, I feel like we took steps backwards,ā€ Russell said. ā€œTonight, we didnā€™t lose right.ā€

MISUNDERSTOOD

Harden was asked after the game why he maybe gets a reputation as a bad teammate.

ā€œI donā€™t know why,ā€ Harden said. ā€œThatā€™s for the media. The media say that. I feel like Iā€™m one of the best teammates that the NBAā€™s seen, on the court and off the court.ā€

Several 76ers, including coach Doc Rivers have talked about Hardenā€™s high level of communication since coming to Philadelphia. Harden downplayed the situation regarding the trade.

ā€œJust because the current situation happened, whatever happened, happened,ā€ Harden said. ā€œIt doesnā€™t mean that Iā€™m a bad teammate. Me, personally, I feel like I needed to do whatā€™s best for my career, and help myself and be happy. It doesnā€™t harp on whether Iā€™m a bad teammate or not.ā€
