MEET THE PIMENTEL FAMILY:
There was a time when the Pimentels thought this moment would never happen.
“Surreal. Because to think that was probably the first person she ever met, literally,” says Silvia.
When Silvia and her husband, Rafael, couldn’t conceive, they were referred to Ranjith Ramasamy, M.D., the Director of Reproductive Urology at Desai Sethi Urology Institute - part of the University of Miami Health System.
“One in six couples in the United States actually suffer from some sort of fertility problems. Fifty percent of the time that is a problem with a male,” Dr. Ramasamy says.
Rafael has a condition that affects sperm production. Dr. Ramasamy suggested a procedure using the ORBEYE 3-D microscope to find and extract any viable sperm.
“With the new ORBEYE microscope, we’re able to get a much better magnification. We’re able to see the tubules and the structures a lot clearer. And this helps us discern within the testes where these areas of sperm production can be,” says Dr. Ramasamy.
“Doctor, tell me how the ORBEYE microscope has improved outcomes for patients?” asks host Pam Giganti.
“We’ve been able to successfully use this in many operations to be able to find sperm, to identify areas of good sperm production within the testes that can help men and couples have fertility,” Dr. Ramasamy says.
Rafael’s procedure was a success, and now they have 2-year-old daughter Ruby. They’re forever grateful to Dr. Ramasamy and the UHealth team.
“Seeing her grow, seeing her develop her personality, that stuff is awesome. You can’t put a price on that,” says Rafael.
