New systems brew in Atlantic after Hurricane Helene

Weather Authority tracks Tropical Depression 12, Isaac, Joyce, and disturbances 2 and 3

PEMBROPE PARK, Fla. – After Hurricane Helene’s far-reaching force, meteorologists were tracking five systems. None posed an immediate threat to South Florida, but one in the southwestern Caribbean was moving north and getting stronger.

On Sunday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center meteorologists tracked Disturbance 2, a broad area of low pressure in the western Caribbean that could strengthen into a tropical depression midweek and move northwestward into the Gulf during the latter portion of the week.

NHC meteorologists warned that Tropical Depression 12, a system in the eastern Atlantic, had continued to become better organized throughout the day after an overnight “deep convective burst” had helped to form “a well-defined closed vortex.”

NHC meteorologists expected Tropical Storm Joyce, east of the Caribbean, to “turn toward the north” on Monday and Tuesday and weaken. In the North Atlantic, NHC meteorologists reported Hurricane Isaac had weakened to a tropical storm that will “affect the Azores over the next few days.” Disturbance 3, a tropical wave, was in the eastern Atlantic.
