MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was called to the Krome Detention Center Tuesday morning after a suspicious substance was found in the mailroom.
Immigrations and Customs Enforcement spokesman Nestor Yglesias said an employee opened an envelope at the detention center at 18201 SW 12th St. that contained an unknown powdery substance.
ICE officials contacted Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the center was placed on lock down while crews assessed the situation.
Detainees were temporarily relocated from the building where the substance was found to other buildings within the center, Yglesias said.
The all-clear was given shortly before 11 a.m. The center has since resumed normal operations.
