Suspect dead after Palmetto Bay police-involved shooting

Police say Ethan Rincon, 25, lunged at officers with pick-axe

PALMETTO BAY, Fla. – A man was fatally shot by police after he lunged at officers with a pick-axe, Miami-Dade police Detective Daniel Ferrin said.

The shooting happened about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday at Southwest 88th Place and Southwest 183rd Terrace in Palmetto Bay.

Ferrin said Ethan Rincon, 25, was breaking neighbors' vehicles windows and puncturing their tires with a pick-axe.

When officers arrived together with family members, Rincon ran inside his home and locked the front door. After family members gave permission to enter the home, Rincon confronted them with the pick-axe, Ferrin said.

Rincon then lunged at the officers, forcing them to open fire, Ferrin said. Rincon was pronounced dead at the scene.

A neighbor called the incident "very tragic."

"I don't know what the situation was," she said. "I guess they felt threatened."

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating the shooting.

Records show that Rincon was out on bond after an arrest last month in Miami Beach.

"I think he was, perhaps, just a troubled young man," the neighbor said.
