MIAMI – A man who fatally shot a woman in her Overtown apartment while her children were home has been arrested, police said.
Wilmer Salmeron, 28, was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder.
Miami police said Salmeron shot and killed Socorro Treminio Delgado, 33, inside her home on Northwest Fourth Avenue early Tuesday morning.
Police said Delgado's 5-month-old daughter and 4-year-old son were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting.
According to the arrest report, Salmeron was arrested by Broward Sheriff's Office deputies who found him on Atlantic Boulevard. The report said Salmeron had a gun in his right front pocket.
A man who lived at the apartment told police that Salmeron woke him up about 4 a.m. and asked him to watch the children, who had been inside their mother's bedroom. He said Salmeron told him that Delgado's sister was on the way to pick them up, but he became concerned when she didn't show up, so he went into the bedroom and found Delgado bleeding from her head.
In court Wednesday, Salmeron was appointed a public defender, who argued that the evidence against him was circumstantial.
"When he's arrested he's got a magazine in his front right pocket," Miami-Dade County Judge Mindy Glazer countered before ordering that Salmeron be held without bond.
Delgado's brother-in-law told Local 10 News that the boy witnessed the shooting.
During a shelter hearing Wednesday afternoon, a judge ruled that both children remain in the custody of the Department of Children and Families until a visitation schedule can be arranged.
