PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — Two Democrats are looking to unseat U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody, R-Florida, in November, but they have to get through the primary race first.
State Rep. Angie Nixon, D-Jacksonville, is a progressive lawmaker.
“Fighting for working families is not politics for me, it’s personal,” Nixon said in a campaign video.
Alex Vindman is a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel.
“In a democracy, you decide who will stand for you — the patriot or the politician,” Vindman said in a campaign video.
Vindman moved to Florida with his wife and daughter three years ago. He was wounded in Iraq and received a Purple Heart. Within 24 hours of announcing his run for Senate in January, he raised a whopping $1.7 million. Since then, he has raised $19 million, even outraising Moody.
If Vindman’s name sounds familiar, in 2019, he appeared before Congress during President Donald Trump’s first impeachment, testifying that the president had pressed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to investigate then-Democratic candidate Joe Biden and his son Hunter.
Following that testimony, his more than two-decade military career came to an end. Now he’s looking to serve in a different way.
“I’ve got a neat opportunity to take us in a different direction, to make life more affordable, lower costs and fight corruption,” Vindman said. “That’s such a huge driver of making life hard here in Florida.”
His campaign is promising to rekindle the American dream for Floridians, with a spotlight on affordability — from making sure buying a home is attainable to driving down health care costs.
“We are reversing the direction we’ve gone with health care costs. Critical. We can’t afford to do a trillion dollars in tax cuts to the billionaires and cut Affordable Care Act subsidies, cut Medicaid. That’s a looming cut,” Vindman said.
“I believe that government should work for the people and not against them, and so that’s why I’m running to become the next U.S. senator,” Nixon said.
Nixon is a six-year state lawmaker and a Florida native. She says she will fight to make life more affordable for all Floridians, saying the economy should work for everyone.
“We really need to work toward getting more affordable housing here in the state, as well as doing some rent stabilization, and we need to tackle this insurance crisis,” Nixon said.
Nixon’s campaign cornerstone is putting people over politics and profit.
“I understand how to work across the aisle. I understand how to hold people accountable because right now, there’s a lot of chaos and corruption happening,” Nixon said.
“I’m here to do what I’ve always done for 21 years in service: Be a fighter for Americans and people of Florida now,” Vindman said.
