MIAMI – A group of Miamians protested President Donald Trump’s first month of moves in office on President’s Day.
Protesters shouted, “This is what democracy looks like!”
It was what democracy looks like. So too is a free and fair election, like the one that put Trump in office. They now call him a dictator.
Protester Silvia Muñoz talked about friends — especially those from Venezuela — who backed Trump in the 2024 election, only to see him end their loved ones’ protected status in the United States.
“He said he was going to deport every immigrant in this country. And he’s doing it,” Muñoz said. “They were naive, unfortunately.”
Trump revoked Temporary Protected Status for more than 600,000 Venezuelans in January.
While the group was decidedly Democratic, there were some former Republicans among them. They pointed to concerns that eliminating departments, mass firings and blocking press access are familiar to those who know dictatorships first hand.
“The similarities between Fidel (Castro) and Trump right now are so clear,” protester Vivian Bosque said.
