MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Florida International University’s board of trustees is set to hold a special meeting Friday to discuss appointing a new president, with reports indicating that Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez may be named interim president.
Nuñez, a Miami native with strong ties to FIU, has not confirmed the reports, but sources told Local 10′s Glenna Milberg that she could step into the role while simultaneously resigning from her position as lieutenant governor.
Current FIU President Kenneth Jessel, whose contract runs through the end of the year, appeared alongside Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at a press conference Wednesday but did not comment on the leadership transition.
Discussions about picking Nuñez to succeed Jessell have been ongoing, as the Miami Herald reported last month.
The meeting, scheduled for Friday morning, could set off a chain reaction of leadership shifts in Tallahassee.
