Trump’s allegation about Haitians prompts rally in support of Harris in Miami-Dade

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. – Some Haitians and Haitian Americans in South Florida were still outraged Sunday about former Donald Trump’s assertion that “in Springfield, they’re eating the dogs; they’re eating the cats.”

North Miami Vice Mayor Mary Estimé-Irvin said the allegation about Haitian migrants that Trump made during his recent debate with Vice President Kamala Harris was baseless.

“The narrative they are trying to portray us is not so,” Estimé-Irvin said. “We are educators, elected officials we are lawyers, doctors.”

Estimé-Irvin and Leoni Hermantin, an attorney born in Haiti and grew up in New York City, were among the dozens at a rally on Sunday organized by the Miami-Dade Democratic Haitian Caucus.

Hermatin, of the National Alliance for the Advancement of Haitian Professionals, said the commentary was very upsetting to the community.

“I thought it was absolutely reflective of the idiot that he is,” Hermantin said, the insult directed at Trump. “What angered me is the fact that children and schools are being harassed.”

Many at the rally held up signs in support of Vice President Kamala Harris and planned to vote for her in November hoping that she will become the next U.S. president.
