Biden administration calls for transparency in Venezuela election

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden left the White House Monday facing questions on various issues, including the contentious election results in Venezuela.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken reacted to the announcement that incumbent Nicolás Maduro had been declared the winner of Venezuela’s presidential election.

“We’ve seen the announcement,” Blinken said. “We have serious concerns that the result announced does not reflect the will or the votes of the Venezuelan people.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic nominee, shared the administration’s commitment to a more democratic and secure future for Venezuela.

“Despite the many challenges, we will continue to work toward a more democratic, prosperous and secure future for the people of Venezuela,” Harris said.

The Biden administration is now calling for transparency, urging election officials to provide a detailed tabulation of votes.

“It’s critical that every vote is counted fairly and transparently,” said State Department spokesman Vedant Patel. “Election officials must share information with the opposition and independent observers.”
