Biden, Harris show solidarity with Trump after shooting during rally

Biden: ‘There’s no place in America for this type of violence’

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris showed solidarity with former President Donald Trump after a shooting on Saturday during a rally in Pennsylvania.

Biden referred to his political opponent as “Donald” and said he had called him and learned that physicians were examining him.

“Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety,” Biden said in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

A shooter died, according to Butler County District Attorney Richard A. Goldinger. A rally attendee also died and another was critically injured.

Biden could not confirm if the shooting was an assassination attempt. He had been in church when the shooting happened and was briefed after talking to reporters.

The U.S. Secret Service announced the agency was investigating the incident as a “possible” assassination attempt.

“There’s no place in America for this type of violence,” Biden said, adding “It’s sick! It’s sick!”

After Biden talked to reporters, Harris also released a statement saying she had been briefed on the shooting and she too was grateful for the Secret Service, first responders, and local authorities who took action.

“Doug and I are relieved that he is not seriously injured. We are praying for him, his family, and all those who have been injured and impacted by this senseless shooting,” Harris said.

She also added that violence such as this had no place in our nation.

“We must all condemn this abhorrent act and do our part to ensure that it does not lead to more violence,” Harris said.

During the shooting, Trump stopped speaking to the crowd, held his right ear, and moved lower behind the podium. The U.S. Secret Service surrounded him. During a coordinated response, someone shouted, “Shooter is down!”

There was blood on Trump when he stood back up. He raised his right fist, as U.S. Secret Service agents formed a ring around him to protect him while moving him away from the podium.

The agents took him away from the crowd and into a vehicle. Some in the crowd screamed in terror. The U.S. Secret Service counterattack group in military gear rushed into the rally to search for the threat. U.S. Secret Service agents in suits wielded their guns.

The U.S. Secret Service later released a statement saying the incident was an “active investigation.”

Law enforcement evacuated the rally and used crime scene tape to block an area. A police helicopter flew above the area.

Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, released a statement: “President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow.”
