Clock ticking over bill banning social media for minors — will DeSantis sign it?

MIAMI – The clock is ticking on the big Florida bill that would ban kids under 16 from having social media accounts.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has not yet signed it, and there is speculation he may veto it. He has until Friday to sign it.

The bill, aiming to protect children from addictive algorithms, passed the Senate and overwhelmingly in the House.

It was a big priority for House Speaker Paul Renner, R-Palm Coast.

“They were designed to be addictive...it’s extremely harmful for many kids,” Renner said.

Lawmakers’ strong support puts more attention on the governor’s slow walk — and possible political power play. He’s faced questions about the bill for weeks.

“I want a pathway for this to actually stick,” DeSantis said about the bill at a recent news conference.

Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples, said, “I think the governor and the speaker are having good conversations about the bill.”

It’s not clear whether lawmakers would move to override any veto.
