South Florida congresswoman faces ethics investigation

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick

WASHINGTON ā€“ A U.S. House of Representatives panel has opened up an investigation into U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, D-Florida, according to a statement issued Wednesday.

The House Committee on Ethics said itā€™s investigating Cherfilus-McCormick, who represents portions of Broward and Palm Beach counties, to determine whether she ā€œviolated the Code of Official Conduct or any law, rule, regulation, or other applicable standard of conduct in the performance of her duties or the discharge of her responsibilities.ā€

The probe surrounds ā€œallegations that she may have violated campaign finance laws and regulations in connection with her 2022 special election and/or 2022 re-election campaigns; failed to properly disclose required information on statements required to be filed with the House; and/or accepted voluntary services for official work from an individual not employed in her congressional office,ā€ the panelā€™s news release states.

The statement doesnā€™t elaborate as to the substance of the allegations.

Cherfilus-McCormickā€™s office responded to the announcement in a statement to Local 10 News on Wednesday afternoon.

ā€œAs the Ethics Committee said in its statement, the mere fact of establishing an investigative subcommittee does not itself indicate that any violation occurred,ā€ a spokesperson said. ā€œRegardless, the Congresswoman takes these matters seriously and is working to resolve them.ā€

Cherfilus-McCormick began representing Floridaā€™s 20th congressional district in January 2022 after winning a special election to succeed longtime U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, a fellow Democrat who died the previous year.
