Gary Troutman sentenced after beating woman to death, raping her in 1986

Family says Troutman went to high school with victim

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – More than 20 years after a pregnant Deerfield Beach woman was found beaten and raped, DNA linked a man with whom she had gone to high school to her murder.

Gary Troutman, 53, was sentenced to 30 years in prison Thursday.

Prosecutors said the victim, Angela Savage, was 24 years old when she was killed in 1986.

Troutman showed no emotion as Savage's family addressed him in a Broward County courtroom.

Savage's brothers showed no remorse for the killer, telling him they hoped he suffered and died in prison.

"Angela's death is like a deep wound that will never heal," said the victim's brother, Wayne Adams. "I believe in my heart that Mr. Troutman don't deserve to live amongst decent human beings. I hope he never walks out of jail again. I hope he dies in jail, and I hope God can forgive me for what I'm saying right now, but I'm just not in that forgiving mood right now."

A sign of remorse came from Savage's mother.

"I'm not mad at Mr. Troutman. I'm not angry him," said Josephine Adams. "But I just feel (he needs) a lot of prayer."

Troutman was also given the chance to address the court.

"Mr. Troutman, do you have any questions, comments, statements?" the judge asked.

"No, ma'am," said Troutman, who stared at the ceiling for most of the hearing.

Troutman killed Savage just a month after he murdered another young pregnant woman in the same Deerfield Beach neighborhood.

"Today, I feel that she's at peace now, and I hope I don't have to cry no more," said Adams.

Savage's family told Local 10 News that Troutman went to Deerfield Beach High School with Savage, and their families attended church together.
