IRS to open ‘Free File’ program on Friday

Tax season is upon us and the Internal Revenue Service will provide its “Free File” tax software beginning on Friday.

The agency said the guided software tools are not written by the IRS but come from partners of the “Free File Program.”

To make sure you will be able to use the free software, access the vendor sites using this link.

According to the IRS website, users of the program must have an adjusted gross income of $84,000 or less. IRS Free File sends you directly to the IRS partner’s website to create an account.

The IRS will not process returns prior to Jan. 29, but any returns filed before the date will be put on hold and later processed.

Tax preparation software is also available in Spanish.
