MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating after a Miami-Dade police detective shot a suspect Monday night.

Francisco Perez Trejo, 44, was shot by police near Northwest 90th Street and Northwest 26th Avenue after a traffic stop, Miami-Dade police Detective Jennifer Capote said.

Police said the officers, who are part of a task force, were dressed in plain clothes and were in an unmarked vehicle.

Perez Trejo had the vehicle in drive when officers approached him, Capote said.

"The vehicle refused to stop," Capote said. "The driver began making abrupt movements inside the vehicle as if he was reaching for something."

After Perez Trejo ignored commands to stop, the detective fired his gun, shooting Perez, Capote said.

"We do know now that these officers were forced to fire at this driver," Capote said.

It's unclear why Perez Trejo was in the El Portal area, but residents nearby told Local 10 News that the area is a common place for men to pick up prostitutes.

"Living here all these years -- a cleanup, you know, is easier said than done, but there could be more patrol units or undercovers in the area to try to clean it up. I am trying to raise kids in this area," one man said.

Perez Trejo was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital to be treated. Police said Tuesday morning that he was in serious but stable condition.

The detective, who suffered a minor injury as a result of the moving vehicle, was treated at the scene.

Authorities said the detective has been with the police department for nine years.
