Man dies in Coconut Creek police custody

Father of Calvon Reid, 39: Police used Taser on him at least 3 times

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – The death of a 39-year-old man in Coconut Creek who had been tased multiple times by police officers is now under investigation.

The usual quiet of the retirement community Wynmoor Village was shattered early Monday morning when Calvon Reid, 39, died after being tased by police officers.

While the Coconut Creek Police Department has kept the case under wraps, Reid's father, Calvin Reid of Greenville South Carolina, said in a phone interview that he was told by a police sergeant that his son, who was working for a meat company in Broward County, mysteriously turned up behind the gated walls at about 1:30 a.m., bleeding from unknown injuries and asking for help.

The elder Reid said he was informed that an elderly couple called 911 to get him medical attention but that when EMTs arrived he refused treatment.

He said that his son allegedly tried to run away from police they used a Taser at least three times before going into cardiac arrest.

Reid, who has a history of drug-related arrests, later died at Northwest Medical Center, according to his father, who said he was told his son also complained to police of breathing problems while he was being apprehended.

One source told Local 10 News that as many as four officers may have tased Reid.

The department issued no press release and has kept the incident hidden from the public. Attempts to speak with Police Chief Michael Mann were unsuccessful as the department noted he and other administrators don't work on Fridays.

"I don't know why they had to tase him that many times," said Reid's father. "We just want to know what happened. We want to know the truth."

The State Attorney's Office said it is aware of the death and will investigate once any internal investigation is completed by the Coconut Creek Police Department.
