West Boca Raton man proudly flies KKK, confederate flags

Mr. Hayes says he's entitled to fly flags, sign welcoming members despite neighbor's concerns

BOCA RATON, Fla. – A west Boca Raton man is making no apologies for flying a Ku Klux Klan flag and confederate flag outside his mobile home.

"As many people know, the white families are producing less children because the father and mother work and you have interracial marriages and gay marriages, so there are less and less white children being born every day," the man, who would only identify himself as Mr. Hayes, told Local 10's Roger Lohse. "So we're against that."

Hayes said he started flying the KKK flag a couple weeks ago and posted a sign seeking new members. He claims so far the response has been positive.

"Don't get anybody throwing bottles on my lawn or anything like that," Hayes said. "They toot their horn. They stop. They wave. They take pictures."

Hayes said he moved to Florida from New York four years ago, yet this Yankee also flies a confederate flag.

Despite the noose hanging in his front yard, Hayes said he does not condone violence.

"We don't go around committing hate crimes," Hayes said. "We don't beat up on faggots or black people or burn crosses or any of that nonsense."

But at least one of his neighbors doesn't think that way.

"It's scary," Margaret Martin said.

Martin, who lives directly across the street, said she can't help but feel threatened. That's because she is the only black person in the neighborhood.

"I'm not trying to stereotype that, but we all know what KKK means," she said.

Hayes said he understands how people might feel threatened, but he doesn't seem to mind.

"Hey, nobody stops the Puerto Ricans from flying their Puerto Rican flag or the Jews from having their yarmulke or whatever it is in the holidays," Hayes said. "I mean, everybody is entitled to do what they want to do. That's what this country is all about -- freedom of speech."
