MIAMI – Bicycle lanes approaching the Rickenbacker Causeway in downtown Miami were painted green this week in an effort to prevent accidents between bicyclists and drivers.
The secretary of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz said "This is part of legislation he sponsored to implement safety measures for bicyclists in the area."
The causeway has been the site of many fatal accidents.
In the latest crash, Walter Reyes, 59, and Henry Hernandez, 40, were struck by a car in the area on Jan. 21.
Reyes' wife has since filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the alleged driver, Alejandro Alvarez, 21, and his father, Rodrigo Alvarez.
According to Miami-Dade police, Alvarez was driving a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta, registered in his father's name, when the car drifted into the bicycle lane after he had been drinking that night at a club on Miami Beach.
Reyes was killed in the crash and Hernandez suffered serious injuries.
Reyes was the third cyclist to be killed in a hit-and-run crash on the Rickenbacker Causeway in five years.
